Salmonella Egg Recall: More Minnesotans Sickened

Seven more Minnesota salmonella cases were reported by the Minnesota Department of Health. That brings the total number of reported Minnesotans sickened by tainted eggs to fourteen. Nationwide, nearly 2,000 people have been sickened by the same strain of salmonella bacteria. The CDC expects that number to grow because the eggs with possible contamination were still being distributed in August and illnesses occurring after mid-July may not have been reported and verified.

More than half a BILLION eggs have been recalled nationwide due to possible salmonella enteritidis contamination. Both Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms issued recalls on eggs they distributed to grocery distribution centers, retail groceries and food service companies between April and August. The form of salmonella in this outbreak can be passed from chickens that seem healthy. The salmonella can grow inside the eggs, as well as contaminating the shell.

All seven of the new Minnesota salmonella enteritidis cases reported eating at the same restaurant in Bemidji, Minnesota recently. The health department confirmed that the eggs used at that restaurant were from Hillandale Farms.

A person infected with the Salmonella enteritidis bacterium usually has fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea beginning 12 to 72 hours after consuming a contaminated product. Salmonella enteritidis can be life-threatening to those with weakened immune systems, which includes young children and the elderly.

Salmonella Enteritidis Poisoning from a Restaurant

Many dishes made in restaurants are made from pooled eggs. If 100 eggs are pooled, and 3-4 eggs are contaminated, everyone who eats eggs from that batch is at risk.

In the Salmonella enteritidis outbreak linked to Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms eggs, many of the people were sickened from restaurant food that used the contaminated eggs. In these cases, those sickened can sue both the restaurant and the supplier. Contact PritzkerOlsen, P.A. for a free consultation, 612-338-0202 or submit our free consultation form on this page.
