Attorney for Campylobacter MN
Officials from the Minnesota Department of Health reported today that routine disease surveillance has revealed additional illnesses linked to the consumption of raw dairy products from the Hartmann dairy farm, Sibley County, Minnesota.
Drinking unpasteurized, raw milk or products made with raw milk is “like playing Russian roulette with your health,” says John Sheehan, director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Division of Dairy and Egg Safety. “We see a number of cases of foodborne illness every year related to the consumption of raw milk.”
Campylobacter Contamination
Campylobacteriosis is a bacterial infection caused by Campylobacter jejuni that affects the intestinal tract and, in rare cases, the bloodstream (sepsis). It is the most commonly reported cause of bacterial diarrhea in the United States. Campylobacteriosis can lead to paralysis and death. We have recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of a man who developed Guillain Barre syndrome and became paralyzed after consuming raw milk contaminated with Campylobacter.
Campylobacter can come from many sources on a farm including:
- water
- soil
- animals
- milking equipment contaminated with manure
- anything that comes in contact with contaminated fecal matter
Campylobacter Symptoms
According to epidemiologists with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), three people are confirmed to be infected with a bacterium called Campylobacter jejuni The symptoms of Campylobacter infection include:
- fever
- diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
- abdominal pain
- malaise
- vomiting
These symptoms usually last for 7-10 days in most people but can last for up to three weeks in 20 percent of cases. Further complications that can accompany Campylobacter infection are arthritis and Guillain Barré syndrome, which is characterized by sudden onset of paralysis.
