Fatalities on I-94 South of St. Cloud, MN:
Car Rear-Ended by a Semitrailer Truck
A car was rear ended by a semitrailer Sunday night on I 94 west of Clear Water, MN, causing a chain reaction involving 5 vehicles. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, there were 11 people in the five vehicles. Two people died in the rear end crash, two people are in critical condition and three people sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The car had slowed down because there was a vehicle on fire. The driver of the semitrailer was going too fast and could not stop and slammed into the vehicle (a Volvo). The semitrailer truck and the Volvo both hit the next car, killing both occupants, and the domino effect crashed two more vehicles.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Wright County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol helped at the scene of the accident. The people involved have been identified as:
- Korene Schmitz, 22, St. Cloud, in critical condition
- Thomas Williams, 78, of Sandwich, IL, deceased
- Sophie A. Mitzel, 61, Illinois, deceased
- Patricia L. Wanner, 61, in critical condition
- Julie M. Kopesky-Anderson, 46, Kimball, MN, minor injuries
- Bridget C. Anderson, 12, Minnesota, no apparent injury
- Caleb J. Anderson, 14, Minnesota, minor injuries
