Hematoma Head Trauma
A hematoma is a collection or pooling of blood. It can occur anywhere on or in the body. In the case of head trauma, a hematoma involves the meninges of the brain and spinal cord.
The meninges main function is to provide protection for the central nervous system. There are three layers of meninges: the outermost, tough membrane is called the dura mater, the middle membrane is the arachnoid and the innermost membrane is called the pia mater.
Most subdural hematomas are the result of a serious head injury. They are referred to as acute subdural hematomas and they are among the deadliest of all head injuries. The three types of hematoma associated with head trauma are:
- Epidural hematoma is when blood collects between the dura mater and the skull.
- Subdural hematoma is when blood collects between the dura mater and the arachnoid.
- Subarachnoid hematoma is a collection of blood between the arachnoid and the pia mater.
All three of these types of hematomas are extremely serious and can cause permanent brain damage or even death. A hematoma puts pressure on the brain, damaging or killing brain tissue. The amount of brain damage depends on how quickly the blood pooled, where the blood pooled and the amount of bleeding.
