Concussion Head Injury
Concussion is the most common type of traumatic brain injury (TBI). A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or from the head hitting an object (e.g. steering wheel). A concussion can change the way your brain functions. Even what seems to be a minor bump or blow to the head can be serious.
A concussion does not always cause a person to black out. Normally, a concussion causes a short loss of awareness or consciousness in response to the injury. Most concussions are mild, but the use of the word mild is misleading because any brain injury damages brain cells.
Concussions are now being taken more seriously and treated more conservatively because of the documented long-term effects of concussions and multiple concussions on professional athletes.
Concussion symptoms may not be evident immediately. It is important to track a head injury for a minimum of 5-7 days. Symptoms of a concussion may include one or more of the following:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Slurred speech
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Memory problems
- Concentration problems
- Light sensitivity
- Noise sensitivity
- Sleep problems
A concussion victim should not settle with an insurance company immediately after an accident because concussion symptoms can be long-lasting and severe. Often when clients come to us with a head injury, they are not aware how seriously injured they are or the full extent of their financial losses due to the concussion. Our lawyers guide them to the appropriate medical professionals to ensure they receive the best care possible.
